Chapter Seventeen

EMMA GLANCED AT HER sister asleep on the bed. Long dark hair fell over the pillow in a cascade of curls. She’d put little, pink, sponge rollers in her hair the night before. Kylie thought she looked like one of her Barbie dolls all dressed up to go out to dinner.

She’d been waiting eagerly for Emma to return from school in the afternoon. As soon as Emma came through the door, she gave her a hug and begged for sister time. That’s what she called it when Emma allowed her in her room to sit on the bed and talk. But today, after just a few minutes, she closed her eyes and fell asleep.

The family had gone through preliminary testing to see if anyone had a compatible blood type. Emma was sure she would be the one. If she couldn’t heal her with music, at least she could donate bone marrow. But Kylie was blood type B and she was AB. Dr. Brock said AB can only donate to AB, therefore she was not compatible. Her parents were both type B and unlikely to be compatible donors as well. You needed a perfect match for marrow donation and a parent was usually only half a match since the child is a combination of the two. At least that was what she understood from the conversation. Biology was not her strongest class.

Dr. Brock had a funny look on her face when she reported the results, as though she expected an outburst of some kind, but her parents sat like zombies, unable to comprehend what was before them. She tried to argue that it wasn’t possible. She had to match, but the doctor explained that a sibling only had a twenty-five percent chance of matching, so most families still had to look outside for a donor. Kylie’s information would be checked against the national donor registry and they would wait for a suitable match. In the meantime, Kylie was going into the hospital Monday for a round of radiation. Her beautiful dark hair, the one redeeming feature on an otherwise thin, funny face, would soon fall out and leave her looking like a little alien being from another planet.

Emma bit her lip and swallowed hard. She’d prayed half the night, waking up intermittently with Kylie on her mind, and begging God not to take her. It didn’t seem fair that he would allow others healing and not her little sister. But Pastor Mackey said that no one knows the mind of God. He could be doing something so big and so awesome we can’t even comprehend it, but we have to trust and believe. Well, she believed as hard as she could, but Kylie was still sick, and she felt like it was somehow her fault.

The computer chimed. She had mail in her inbox. She sat at the desk and opened the window. About a dozen new messages had arrived since the last time she checked–an hour ago. Ever since Pastor
